- Slow Saturday breakfast at Wild Oats — or PiliPili on other days
- Lunch at Timberlake Organic Village on the N2

- Brunch on the Heads channel at East Head Café

- End on the water at Jeffreys Bay: Kitchen Windows, the shell museum, then Jeffreys Bay Adventures
The feel of the place
Ocean on one side, mountains on the other, towns that swing between holiday buzz and lagoon quiet. One hour you are on a beach boardwalk; the next you are under yellowwoods that make midday feel like dusk. This stretch stays on the N2 through-road — Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna, Plett, Storms River — then peels to the surf at Jeffreys Bay. George, Kareedouw and Humansdorp can wait for another drive.
Best times to go
- March–May / September–November: Mild days, greener hills, and fewer December traffic snakes on the N2.
- December/January: Peak holiday energy. Book beds early, start drives early, and accept that every lookout will have company.
- Winter: Quieter towns, dramatic skies, and the big Knysna and Jeffreys Bay festivals if you like a crowd. Pack waterproofs.
- Saturdays in Sedgefield: Wild Oats is Saturday-only. Use PiliPili for breakfast the rest of the week.
Walks and hikes
This is boardwalk-and-peninsula country more than summit country. Carry water, watch the weather, and budget park fees.
- Map of Africa viewpoint: A short pull-off above Wilderness where the Kaaimans loop looks like the continent.
- Wilderness boardwalks: From Ebb and Flow on the Touw — lagoon paths and the classic kingfisher trails inside Garden Route National Park.
- Jubilee Creek: Yellowwoods, a stream, and a picnic in the Knysna forest if you want cool air off the N2.

- Robberg Nature Reserve: The peninsula hike out of Plett — seals, cliffs, and a walk that earns lunch at The Lookout. CapeNature fees apply.
- Robberg Nature Reserve: The peninsula hike out of Plett — seals, cliffs, and a walk that earns lunch at The Lookout. CapeNature fees apply.
- Storms River Mouth: The suspension bridge and coastal trail where the river hits the sea. This is the Tsitsikamma postcard, not the village diner.
Nature reserves
The protected bits along this road are forest, lagoon and a wild peninsula — not big-five bush. Gate times matter in December. Inland of Mossel Bay, Gondwana Game Reserve is the exception if you want a proper game-drive morning.

- Garden Route National Park: The SANParks umbrella for Wilderness (Ebb and Flow), the Knysna lakes and forest, and Tsitsikamma / Storms River Mouth. One Wild Card covers a lot of this stretch.
- Goukamma Nature Reserve: CapeNature lagoon and dune fynbos between Sedgefield and Buffels Bay — the quiet water next to the N2.
- Robberg Nature Reserve: CapeNature’s Plett peninsula. Do it as a hike day, not a drive-by.
- Tsitsikamma: Storms River Mouth for the bridge; the village and canopy tours sit just inland of the park.
Festivals on the Garden Route
Dates move every year. Check the official pages before you book beds around them — July in Knysna or Jeffreys Bay is a different trip to a quiet Tuesday in May.
- Knysna Oyster Festival: The Garden Route’s big winter party, usually ten days in June/July: oysters, sport, markets, and a town that is suddenly full.
- Pink Loerie Mardi Gras: Knysna’s LGBTQIA+ arts festival, typically late April into early May.
- J-Bay Surf Festival: July in Jeffreys Bay around the pro surf event — music, sport, and a packed Supertubes. If you came for empty waves, pick another month.
Markets
- Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market: Saturday-only, on the N2 west of Sedgefield. Producer stalls, baking, and the slow breakfast the planner is built around. Rain or shine.
- Timberlake Organic Village: N2 eco-village between Wilderness and Sedgefield — coffee, cheese, and a sit-down lunch without waiting for Saturday.
Towns worth lingering in
- Mossel Bay: The warm-up act — harbour energy, a Blue Shed brunch, and enough adrenaline if you want it. Do the over-ocean zipline first, then the Point of Human Origins cave tour at Pinnacle Point (booked, guided, lots of stairs). Hartenbos and Great Brak are the N2 stepping stones east, not overnight towns.

- Wilderness: Lagoons, boardwalks, and that soft “we should stay another night” feeling.
- Sedgefield / the lakes: The Garden Route’s breath between Wilderness and Knysna — Swartvlei light, dinner at VDM Bistro, and Saturday at Wild Oats. Other mornings, breakfast at PiliPili on Claude Urban Drive. Sleep on The Island at In Toto if you want kayaks and a short walk to the market.
- Knysna: Lagoon town with Heads drama. Sail from the waterfront, eat at Sirocco on Thesen Island, and brunch at East Head Café. Overnight in the forest at Teniqua Treetops — treehouse suites off the Karatara / Barrington road, not a highway motel.

- Plettenberg Bay: Beaches that behave like postcards, and lunch on the deck at The Lookout.

- Storms River / Tsitsikamma:
- Storms River / Tsitsikamma: Indigenous forest, crashing coast, canopy tours above the village, and a milkshake at Marilyn’s 60s Diner. The Fernery is the overnight before you run east.
- Jeffreys Bay: The surf-town full stop. Dinner at Kitchen Windows on Dolphin Beach, a night at Marina Martinique, then Nina’s, the shell museum, and a last adventure morning. It is a surfing town — locals have been known to get upset when their waves get overrun with tourists.

This is the classic Mossel Bay → Jeffreys Bay stretch on the N2. For a coastal loop closer to Cape Town, pair it with Whale Coast. If you are carrying on east into wilder cliff country, Wild Coast is the next chapter.
Practical notes
- The N2 is fast but not the whole story — budget time for the peninsula cave, Knysna Heads, Teniqua’s forest road, and the last peel to Jeffreys Bay.
- Wild Oats is Saturday-only (rain or shine). PiliPili covers weekday breakfast.
- Teniqua is inland of the N2 on the Karatara / Barrington road — a proper forest overnight, not a drive-by.
- Jeffreys Bay is a surfing town. Share the lineup, or stay on the sand.
- Park fees apply at SANParks and CapeNature gates; Wild Cards help if you are stacking parks.
- Weather flips quickly; a sunny beach morning can be a misty forest afternoon.
- December traffic around Knysna and Plett is real — leave early or linger late. Festival weeks in Knysna and JBay fill beds too.
More photos and stops live on the routes themselves — use the planner links when you’re ready to build days around petrol, padstals, and overnight stays.
FAQ
How many days do you need for the Garden Route?
Give the N2 more than a one-night hop. The planner trip is a multi-day drive from Mossel Bay to Jeffreys Bay, with nights around Sedgefield, the Knysna forest, Tsitsikamma, and Marina Martinique. Lagoons, forests, and lookouts hang off the sides, and weather can steal an afternoon.
When is the best time to drive the Garden Route?
March to May and September to November are the kinder months: milder days and fewer December traffic snakes. Winter is quieter, with dramatic skies, if you pack waterproofs — unless you have come for Oyster Festival or J-Bay in July.
Is the N2 the whole Garden Route?
No. The N2 is the spine. The trip is the detours — Pinnacle Point, Wild Oats, Knysna lagoon, East Head, Teniqua, and the last run into Jeffreys Bay. George, Kareedouw and Humansdorp are not on this road trip.
Is Wild Oats open every day?
No. Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market in Sedgefield is Saturday-only. Use PiliPili Beach Restaurant for breakfast on other days.
Can I surf at Jeffreys Bay?
It is a surfing town, but locals have been known to get upset when their waves get overrun with tourists. Be polite in the water, or watch from the beach.
Do I need a Wild Card?
Park fees apply at SANParks and CapeNature gates if you add reserve days. A Wild Card helps if you are stacking parks on this stretch.
